Among the Herbst family’s history in SCORE, Troy Herbst is perhaps one of its most recognizable members. Son of Jerry Herbst who began his off-road racing career in the early 1970s, Troy and brothers Ed and Tim, followed suit in the early to mid-1990s.

Troy Herbst’s winning career in SCORE began in a Class 1 vehicle earning his first overall race victory at the SCORE Baja 500 in 1996. Herbst quickly became one of the top drivers winning six more SCORE Baja 500 victories in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. Herbst also earned four SCORE Overall Season Points Championships in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2006, as well as a total of seven multi-class season championships.

Troy, and brothers Ed and Tim, have supported and contributed to the sport through their passion, encouragement, and innovations. In 1995, the Herbst Motorsports team with Mike Smith Fabrication, built a unique Class 1 vehicle they called a “truggy”. It had the frame and structure of an Unlimited Class 1 buggy, but with a front engine and solid rear axle of a SCORE Trophy Truck. They named it the Land Shark, and it was driven by Troy and champion moto racer Larry Roeseler. The Land Shark dominated the class, winning back to back SCORE Baja 500 Overalls in 2002 and 2003.
