     ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – (While the world continues its ferocious fight against the vicious virus called COVID-19, SCORE continues its preparation to launch its 2020 SCORE World Desert Championship with a special series of features called SCORE Fantastic Flashbacks—SCORE Baja 500, Part Two). SCORE International, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, began its spectacular run of over 150 races in Baja California, Mexico on July 26, 1974 with the production of the SCORE Baja Internacional, always known and now legally named the SCORE Baja 500. With 279 official starters in that first SCORE event in Mexico, great desert racers have been international legends over the long history of one of the top motorsports events in the world. Racers like Ivan Stewart, Larry Roeseler, Rod Hall, Bobby Ferro, Parnelli Jones, Larry Ragland, Robby Gordon, Malcolm Smith, Dr. Bud Feldkamp, Troy Herbst, Rob MacCachren, Bryce Menzies, Steve Hengeveld, Johnny Campbell, Justin Morgan, Richard Jackson, Jim O’Neal and McMillin family racers—Corky, Scott, Mark and Andy—are all part of the legacy of all-time multiple overall four-wheel and multiple two-wheel vehicle winners of the SCORE Baja 500. QUICK HISTORY The SCORE Baja 500 is one of the top motorsports events in the world. The Baja 500 was actually started in 1969 by the NORRA organization but because of legal challenges regarding the use of the name after NORRA was removed as the official U.S desert racing promoter in Mexico by the government at the end of 1972, SCORE had to use the name SCORE Baja Internacional for over a decade. Eventually then-SCORE owner Sal Fish was able to negotiate the use of the original name of the race and it became duly trademarked as the SCORE Baja 500. In 1973, the Baja 500 was organized and produced by a local tourism group called the Baja Sports Committee. FAST FORWARD With the 2020 season reduced to three races while the battle rages against Coronavirus (COVID-19), desert racers around the world are hoping to start the 2020 SCORE season at the legendary 52nd annual BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500, presented by 4Wheel Parts, in Baja California. Launching its 47th season as the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, the season-opening event of the three-race internationally-televised 2020 SCORE World Desert Championship has been moved to July 14-19 in Ensenada. Ensenada is a coastal city on the Bahia de Todos Santos area of the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of the U.S. border at San Diego. Most the world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s celebration of one of the top 10 motorsports events in the entire world. All three 2020 SCORE races will be run on the northern part of Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the fifth consecutive year. Ensenada is the heart and soul of the SCORE Baja 500 as the popular summertime race will start for the 47th time there and finish for the 43rd time there. MULTI CLASS WINNERS Leading this prestigious group of multiple class winners are Jim O’Neal with 21 class wins, the late great Rod Hall with 18 along with Ivan Stewart and Larry Roeseler both with 17 and Richard Jackson with 15 total class victories. BY THE NUMBERS—STARTERS/FINISHERS Looking at some overall stats from this legendary race, a total of 13,338 vehicles have started the first 51 races for an average of 261.5 starters per race. A total of 7,384 vehicles have finished the first 51 races for an average of 144.8 finishers per race. Percentage-wise, 55.4% is the average finishing rate for this legendary race. In the first 51 years, the most ever starters came in 2007 when 492 vehicles left the start line and the second most starters was in 2006 when 438 started the race. In the first 51 years, the most ever finishers came in 2007 when 228 finished race and the second most finishers was in 2006 when 221 vehicles finished the race. In the first 51 years of the world’s most famous desert race, the fewest number of starters was the first race back in 1969 when there were 163 and the fewest number of finishers was also in 1969 when there were 73 finishers. Overall there have been 10 SCORE Baja 500 races with 300 or more starters. The most recent races with 300 or more starters were the 50th anniversary in 2018 (321) and before that it was 2004 (300). BY THE NUMBERS—START/FINISH SITES In the first 51 years, the SCORE Baja 500 has started 46 times in Ensenada, three times in Ojos Negros and one time each in Barstow, Calif. (USA) in 1984 and in San Felipe in 1989. During those first 51 years, the SCORE Baja 500 has finished 42 times in Ensenada, five times in Santo Tomas, twice in Ojos Negros and once each in Barstow, Calif. (USA) in 1984 and in San Felipe (1989). SCORE was forced to move the race in both 1984 and 1989 because of unresolved issues between the Mexican Government and local ejidos (ranchers). The other years that the event wasn’t held in Ensenada were because of logistical challenges at the time. Besides the two events in race history with over 400 starters (492 in 2007 and 438 in 2006), the eight years with 300 or more total starters were 1977 (384), 1976 (384), 1975 (365), 2005 (345), 1973 (333), 2018 (321), 1972 (301) and 2004 (300).
