ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – Launching its sixth decade this year as the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, earliest entries for the upcoming season-opening King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250, include Bryce Menzies, Jason McMillin, Tim Herbst, Thor Herbst, EJ Herbst, Luke McMillin, Dan McMillin/Andy McMillin, Gustavo Vildosola Sr, Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr, Clay Lawrence, Mikey Lawrence, Andrew Myers, Dan Myers, Tamara Myers/Brittney Myers/Steve Myers, Alan Ampudia, Christopher Polvoorde, Paul Weel/Toby Price, Santiago Creel, Dale Ebberts, Broc Dickerson, and Tucker Hopkins.

     Round 1 of the four-race 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held March 28-April 2 in the quaint, peaceful village of San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.

     Pre-race Contingency, Tech Inspection and the start/finish line compound will be located on the picturesque El Malecon in San Felipe along the inspiring azure waters of the Sea of Cortez.

     San Felipe is 125 miles south of the U.S. Border at Calexico, Calif. on the eastern side of the Baja peninsula along the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez. All four 2023 SCORE races will be held on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the ninth consecutive year.

EARLY ENTRIES

     With over 250 entries anticipated at the start line to launch the 51st season of SCORE desert racing, 95 total early entries have been received so far for the popular ‘Spring Break’ event, with racers representing 18 U.S. States, and six countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Australia, Canada, Chile, and New Zealand.

DOUBLE DIGITS

     With double-digit entries to date are the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck (high-tech, unlimited, 1000-horsepower, custom trucks) with 29 and Trophy Truck Spec, (SCORE Trophy Trucks with spec engines) with 30.

THREE DECADES-PLUS

     Celebrating the 37th anniversary of the youngest of the three legendary SCORE Baja races, sometimes referred to as the SCORE ‘Baby Baja’, entries are being accepted on the SCORE website under Race Info at https://score-raceinfo.com/37th-san-felipe-250-march-20-24-2024/ for Pro and Sportsman entries for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads.

ENTRY DEADLINES

     The deadline to enter in time to be included in the SCORE San Felipe 250 Race Day program and the race program is 5 p.m. PT on Friday March 8.

     Starting positions for the classes that aren’t qualifying will be determined by a random drawing after the close of online racer registration. Results of the start draw will be posted on the SCORE website by 6 p.m. PT on Friday, March 15.

     Late entries may register in person at the SCORE Ensenada office will have until 5 p.m. PT on Thursday, March 14. Those late entries, however, will not be included in the start draw.

     Late, on-site entries will receive the next starting position within the class entered.

QUALIFYING

     For just the fifth time in the history of this popular ‘Spring Break’ race, SCORE will hold a qualifying session starting at 7 a.m. PT on Thursday, March 21 to determine the starting positions within each class for the SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend and Trophy Truck Spec classes. The starting order for qualifying in each class will be the order in which they entered the race.

    Entries received in the qualifying classes received after Friday, March 8 will be given then next available starting slot within their respective classes.

     Start order for qualifying will be determined by the date and time that they are received.

     The first-time qualifying was held for this race was in 2017 when Rob MacCachren, Cameron Steele and Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez were the top three qualifiers in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 1000-horsepower, unlimited custom trucks.

    In 2021, Bryce Menzies was the fastest qualifier followed by Andy McMillin and his cousin Luke McMillin. At the finish of the race Menzies was the winner, L. McMillin was second and A. McMillin finished in third place.

     In 2022, Menzies was the fastest qualifier again followed by Justin Lofton and L. McMillin. At the finish, L. McMillin was the winner, Menzies was second at the team of Mike Walser/Jax Redline finished in third place.

     In 2023, Australia’s Toby Price was fastest qualifier followed by Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr, and Menzies. At the finish, Luke McMillin was the winner, Mexico’s Alan Ampudia was second, and Las Vegas’ Menzies finished in third place.

     Qualifying is not open to the public and will be held on a five-mile course that is not part of the official race course.

AWD MENZIES

     A one-time protégé of Rob ‘The G.O.A.T.’ MacCachren, Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies has molded his own enviable career in desert racing and rally racing out of the Menzies Motorsports race shop in his hometown.

     Menzies, 36, literally exploded onto the SCORE desert racing scene in 2011 winning the SCORE Overall point championship, the SCORE Trophy Truck season point crown, two individual race wins and was voted as the 2011 SCORE Rookie of the Year.

     Menzies has 10 career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, including three straight to finish his 2023 championship season at the SCORE Baja 500, SCORE Baja 400, and SCORE Baja 1000. It was his third consecutive win in the SCORE Baja 400 and his first in the SCORE Baja 1000.

     Menzies’ victory in the epic 2023 SCORE Baja 1000 (for the first time run from La Paz to Ensenada) earned him the 10th spot in the winner’s list of the SCORE Baja Triple Crown Award for racers who have won all three of the traditional SCORE Baja races—SCORE San Felipe 250, SCORE Baja 500, and SCORE Baja 1000.

     A great start to his SCORE career in 2011 that evolved quickly as Menzies branched out into short-course racing, rally race, long-jump record feats and rock-crawling victories.

    In 2016 Menzies made history by jumping his off-road truck 115.6m (379.4ft) over buildings in a New Mexico ghost town to set a new truck distance record.

    With 10 career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, Menzies is obviously among the favorites in his No. 7 Red Bull Menzies Motorsports Ford Raptor all-wheel drive SCORE Trophy Truck built by Mason Motorsports.

     He won the 2021 SCORE San Felipe 250 and finished second in this race to Luke McMillin in both 2022 and 2023.

McNEIL TOPS 2023

     Jason McNeil, 45, El Cajon, Calif., was honored as the 2023 SCORE Overall point champion, SCORE Overall Truck champion as well as winning the title in the Trophy Truck Spec class.

     After his victory in the 2023 SCORE Baja 400, McNeil, who drove solo for the first three races of the season, said, “It was a pretty ridiculous day just with everything. We got hung up on a rock and damaged the drive shaft, so we could only go up to 80 miles/hour, it was vibrating pretty bad. We got passed during a bottleneck, but ended getting back around them and just kept going after that. It was a great race. SCORE did a good job and I’ll remember this one for a while. The entire team helped me out so much, I couldn’t have done it without them.”

     The victory was his second straight 2023 win in the behemoth Trophy Truck Spec class. In the SCORE Baja 400, McNeil covered the grueling course in 8:28:57 while averaging 45.35 mph in his No. 234 Fiberwerx TSCO-Chevy. He defeated a race-high 37 starters in his class and finished 14th overall in the September race.

     After finishing second in the SCORE San Felipe 250 in his class, and then winning his class in both the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 400, McNeil put him at the head of the class. He held on through several mechanical issues in the SCORE Baja 1000 for an 18th-place finish in the season finale.

     In the 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship, McNeil won two races and finished sixth in class twice to win the Trophy Truck Spec season point championship.

TRES ‘LOS TERRIBLES’

     One of the most legendary families in all of desert racing, the Herbst family now has part of its third generation as racers on the Terrible Herbst Motorsports Monster Energy team from Las Vegas.

     Started by family patriarch the late Jerry Herbst back in the 1970s and carrying through until the 2010s with brothers Ed, Tim and Troy Herbst, part of the third generation of the Herbst boys has taken to desert racing.

     For this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Terrible Herbst Motorsports will have three of their Herbst-Smith Fab custom trucks in the starting grid, one in SCORE Trophy Truck and two in Trophy Truck Spec.

     Driver of record in the No. 19 Monster Energy Ford F-150 in SCORE Trophy Truck will be Tim Herbst, 60, who will share driving duties with another celebrated second-gen desert racer from Las Vegas, Pat Dean, 55.

     Driver of record in the No. 219 Monster Energy Chevy Silverado in Trophy Truck Spec will be Tim Herbst’s son Thor Herbst, 24.

     The third Terrible Herbst Motorsports entry will be the No. 263, with EJ Herbst (son of Ed Herbst), 23, with New Zealand rally racer Ryan Millen, 38, as his second driver.

     Historically in San Felipe, Tim Herbst teamed with his older brother Ed Herbst to win the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck class four times, 1995 and then three consecutive years (1999, 2000, 2001).

     In last year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Tim Herbst finished 13th out of 39 starters in SCORE Trophy Truck while Thor Herbst earned his first SCORE race win over a SCORE-record 43 starters in the Trophy Truck Spec class where EJ Herbst finished seventh. For the grueling season, Tim finished ninth in SCORE Trophy Truck and in Trophy Truck Spec, EJ finished second in points and Thor was 10th.

BIG BLUE M RACING

…‘THE LUKE’

    Emerging as the ‘Face of SCORE’ with a look of a movie star and the heart of a lion, San Diego’s third-generation desert racer Luke ‘The Luke’ McMillin, 31, roared his way to the top of the point leaderboard in the SCORE Trophy Truck division and eventually the top of the SCORE Overall point leaderboard as well in 2022.

    Driving solo the first three races of the year, Luke McMillin finished first in the SCORE San Felipe 250, sixth place in the SCORE Baja 500, second-place in the SCORE Baja 400 and capped the season with the help of the G.O.A.T. (Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren who drove the first 394 miles) by winning the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000 to complete his championship 2022 season in the SCORE World Desert Championship.

     The youngest of the current active McMillin racers, Luke McMillin won the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division and the SCORE Overall and SCORE Truck title in his McMillin Racing No. 83 AWD Chevy 1500 built by Mason Motorsports.

     In the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship, ‘The Luke’ won the SCORE San Felipe 250, finished fourth in the SCORE Baja 500, and second in both the SCORE Baja 500, and the SCORE Baja 1000 to finish a close second to Menzies in the season point championship battle.

     Luke McMillin now has five career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins and earned a threepeat in in the 2022 BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000, splitting the driving with Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren as his second driver. McMillin won the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000 as the second driver for MacCachren and in 2020 he won the iconic race with Larry Roeseler as his additional driver.

     In the SCORE San Felipe 250, “The Luke” won Class 1 in 2012 before the 2022 and 2023 SCORE Trophy Truck and SCORE Overall race victories.

…DAN McMILLIN & ANDY McMILLIN

    One the third-generation of McMillin family racers from the Big Blue Machine, San Diego’s Dan McMillin, 35, returns to race in the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division against his younger brother Luke McMillin and as many as 40 expected SCORE Trophy Truck entries.

     Dan McMillin won the 2020 SCORE Baja 500 which was held in San Felipe because of the pandemic and he drives the No. 23 4 Wheel Parts AWD Chevy 1500 built by Mason Motorsports.

     In 2022, Dan McMillin finished 22nd in the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250, 10th in the SCORE Baja 500 and third place in the SCORE Baja 400 and capped the year by finishing second behind his brother in the SCORE Baja 1000.

     For the year, Dan McMillin finished second (behind his brother Luke McMillin) in the 2022 SCORE Trophy Truck season point standings, his best finish in the featured racing division and the SCORE Overall point standings.

     In 2023, Dan McMillin finished seventh in the season points.

     For the 2024 season, Dan McMillin will have his cousin Andy McMillin, 36, of San Diego, as his second driver. This will mark the first time in the history of the Big Blue M Racing Machine that these two cousins have raced together in a SCORE race.

     Andy McMillin, who has 12 career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, sold his truck after the 2022 season and came back last year to win the SCORE Baja 1000 as the second of three drivers for Bryce Menzies and the third driver was Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola.

MEXICANA LOGISTICS

     Considered the first family of Mexican desert racers, Gustavo Vildosola Sr and his son Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr are both entered in the SCORE Baja 1000.

     From Mexicali, Gustavo, 70, and Tavo, 42, are both veteran SCORE racers with numerous race wins and season point titles on their impressive resumes.

     For this year’s SCORE Baja 1000, they will be in different trucks, one in SCORE TT Legend (SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50 years old and the other in SCORE Trophy Truck.

     Gustavo Vildosola Sr will drive the No. 1L all-wheel drive Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports in SCORE TT Legend.

     Vildosola Sr won the 2022 and 2023 SCORE TT Legend (drivers over 50 years old) season point titles following undefeated seasons with four straight victories each year in the SCORE San Felipe 250, the SCORE Baja 500, the SCORE Baja 400 and the SCORE Baja 1000. Vildosola Sr, also won the SCORE TT Legend season point championship in 2018 with Scott Bailey as a second driver.

     He won in all four races in 2022 and 2023 with help from legendary Hall of Fame racer Ricky Johnson, 58, El Cajon, Calif. who drove the first half of each race.

     Vildosola Sr also has three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins in his illustrious career in SCORE desert racing.

     Vildosola Sr, who has raced in many classes in his illustrious career, has five career class wins in the SCORE San Felipe 250, two in SCORE Trophy Truck (2003, 2013) and in SCORE TT Legend in 2017, 2022 and 2023.

     Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr will drive the No. 21 all-wheel drive Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports in SCORE Trophy Truck.

     Tavo has seven career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins including three straight in the SCORE San Felipe 250 (2013, 2014, 2015).

     In the SCORE San Felipe 250, Tavo has six career class wins, three each in Pro Truck (1996, 2005, 2006) and SCORE Trophy Truck. He finished fifth in last year’s race in SCORE Trophy Truck

     Tavo was also one of three drivers on the winning team in the 2023 SCORE Baja 1000 with driver of record Bryce Menzies and Andy McMillin.

MYERS FAMILY

     Another second and third generation SCORE race team, Myers racing returned to SCORE in 2021 after an absence for several years.

     The famous SoCal racing family is back in a major way with four family members in three family entries, two in SCORE Trophy Truck and one in Class 10. All three are part of the Toyota Escondido TE Motorsports Team.

     Dan Myers, 45, Newport Beach, Calif., will be driver of record in SCORE Trophy Truck while his younger brother Andrew Myers, 44 of San Marcos will be in another SCORE Trophy Truck and their nieces Tamara Myers, 29, and Brittney Myers, 27, of Newport Beach, Calif., are racing together.

     Dan and Andrew’s older brother Steve Myers, 57, of Newport Beach, is listed as an additional driver for his daughters Tamara and Britney.

     Dan Myers will be racing in SCORE Trophy Truck in the No. 6 TE Motorsports Toyota Tundra built by Brenthel Industries while Andrew Myers will drive in SCORE Trophy Truck in his No. 69 Toyota Tundra built by Herbst-Smith Fab and the Myers Girls (with possible help from Dad Steve), will split the driving in their No. 1023 ChespyKraft-Honda.

     A second-generation SCORE race team, Dan and Andrew have all had their share of race wins in SCORE racing over the years as they prepare to continue this new Myers family adventure.

     Dan Myers was sixth in points out of 44 racers in SCORE Trophy Truck in 2022, finishing all four races with a season-high 10th place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000. Andrew Myers only raced in last year’s SCORE Baja 400 where he was a DNF.

    The biggest Myers family SCORE class win was in 2000 when Steve Myers was the driver of record and split the driving with his brothers Dan and Andrew to win Class 10 in the epic new millennium race of nearly 1,700 miles that started in Ensenada and finished in Cabo San Lucas.

     Andrew was away from desert racing for the most part for nearly a decade as he pursued a NASCAR stock car racing career. During his NASCAR years he competed in the Truck Series, the ARCA Series as well as both the NASCAR Pro Series West and the NASCAR Pro Series East.

     In 2023, Andrew finished in third place on the podium in the final points after finishing all four races, while Dan had two unfortunate DNFs and finished 15th in the final SCORE Trophy Truck points and the Myers sisters finished seventh in Class 10 points.

     In last year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Andrew finished in fourth, while Dan and the Myers Girls both had DNFs.

AMPUDIA-PAPAS Y BEER

     Alan Ampudia, 33, of Ensenada, Mexico, is a major part of the second-generation of Mexican SCORE desert racers from the well-known Ampudia family, who own Papas Y Beer night clubs in Ensenada, Mexico and Rosarito Beach, Mexico.

     Alan Ampudia drives the AWD No. 10 Papas Y Beer Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports.

     Ampudia and his younger brother Aaron Ampudia drove to the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000. Alan Ampudia was as high as third in the 2022 SCORE Trophy Truck season points, but a DNF in the SCORE Baja 1000 dropped down to 10th in points for the 2022 season.

     In 2023, Alan Ampudia opened the season with a second-place finish in SCORE Trophy Truck in the SCORE San Felipe 250. He averaged 61.63 miles per hour over the 263.50-mile race course, finishing second overall as well, seven minutes, 16 seconds behind the race winner Luke McMillin. For the 2023 season, Ampudia finished fifth in the points in SCORE Trophy Truck, including a 10th place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000.

CPR

     Building experience and some years under his belt along the trail upwards, SoCal’s youthful dynamo Christopher Polvoorde led the SCORE Overall point standings for three races in 2022 and the massive Trophy Truck Spec class as well until an untimely DNF in the SCORE Baja 1000 stopped his championship run.

     After gaining more experience last season racing in two classes, the young buck is back!

     He started the 2022 with a season-opening Trophy Truck Spec class victory at the King Shocks 35th SCORE San Felipe 250 that saw a race-high 36 starters in his class.

     Polvoorde may be just 23 years old, but he has already been racing for over 10 years and has evolved quickly into a SCORE Baja racing season point championship contender.

     Polvoorde has raced in many different disciplines including Short Course, Desert Racing, Rally Racing, Midget Racing, Robby Gordon’s Stadium Trucks, Kart Racing and the King of the Hammers where he won his class in 2022.

     When he isn’t driving four-wheel race vehicles, he also is an avid mountain bike enthusiast in his limited spare time.

     In this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Polvoorde will debut his Optima Batteries AWD No. 94 Mason Motorsports-built Ford Raptor.

DUO FROM DOWN UNDER

     Returning to race again in SCORE Trophy Truck will be the Australian duo Toby Price, 36, multi-time Dakar Rally motorcycle champion, and Paul Weel, 44, in their AWD No. 46 Chevy Silverado-Mason.

     Price finished second overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck in the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000 as the second driver for Qatar’s Nasser Al-Atiyah, also a multi-time Dakar 4-wheel vehicle champion.

     Weel is a veteran Australian off-road racer and former supercar driver.

     Price is a nine-time KTM factory racer in the Dakar Rally race having won the motorcycle division in both 2016 and 2019 and finishing on the podium in second place this in 2023 and in third place in 2015, 2018 and 2020. This year, Price finished in fifth place in Dakar.

SANTIAGO CREEL

     International Motorcycle Rally Racer and prominent Mexico City entrepreneur Santiago Creel, 37, has entered the King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250 in the Trophy Truck Spec class.

     Creel, who only started SCORE racing in 2017, has compiled an enviable record of six season class point titles including two class wins in the SCORE Baja 500, 2019 in Pro Moto Limited and 2020 in Trophy Truck Spec as the second driver for Jorge Sampietro.

     Creel has won an impressive nine Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Awards, presented by Toyota Escondido, including a SCORE-record three in 2019, when he led teams as the Rider of Record in Pro Moto Unlimited, Pro Moto Limited and Pro Moto 30.

     As DOR in Trophy Truck Spec this year, Creel’s 2023 campaign saw him finish all four races in the top 20 in the class with the most entries, topped by a ninth place out of 34 starters in the SCORE Baja 1000. He drives his No. 260 Monkey Business TSCO-Chevy.

CHAMP RETURNS

     After nearly two decades as an occasional second driver for several teams, SCORE champion racer Dale Ebberts is back again with his own team with a special family twist.

     Racing in his No. 1077 ESM-Toyota in Class 10, Ebberts, 53, Wilton, Calif., will be joined in this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 by his daughter Madison Ebberts, 24, Alpharetta, Ga., and his son Ezra Ebberts, 20, Wilton, Calif.

     Both with their own desert racing driving experience, Madison Ebberts is on the PR staff for American Honda while Ezra Ebberts is a student at the University of Nevada in Reno. Ezra Ebberts just won Class 10 in the recent King of the Hammers in the same Class 10 car that the Ebberts will race in San Felipe.

     With multiple SCORE race wins in Class 1 in his career, Ebberts was the 2003 SCORE Overall Point Champion, including winning his class in the 2003 SCORE San Felipe 250.

     Prior to last year, he has raced with several race teams including Shelby Reid (Class 1) where they finished second in class in San Felipe in 2022 and in the 2022 SCORE Baja 1000 where he finished eighth in Class 10 as the second driver for Ivan Tagle.

     In last year’s epic SCORE Baja 1000 from La Paz to Ensenada, Dale finished fifth in Class 10 as an additional driver for Stan Potter.

BROC DICKERSON

    One of the young guns who has been racing with SCORE for seven years, second-generation SCORE racer Broc Dickerson, 22, Brawley, Calif., has raced in several classes in his short career and has moved up to the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck class for this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250.

     Dickerson, who took most of last year off because a death in his family, has entered his No. 34 Chevy Silverado built by veteran champion vehicle builder Alumi Craft Race Cars.

     His father Jeff Dickerson, 49, of Brawley, Calif., also a SCORE champion racer, is listed as a co-driver for the team.

     Dickerson won Class 10 in the 2017 SCORE San Felipe 250 on his way to winning the 2017 SCORE Class 10 season point championship.

     In last year’s once-in-a-lifetime SCORE Baja 1000, Dickerson was the third driver for the son/father duo of Mason and Matt Cullen, Long Beach, Calif. as the trio finished fifth out of 34 starters in the massive Trophy Truck Spec class.

TUCKER HOPKINS

    Tucker Hopkins, 30, Venice, Calif., has entered this year as a Rider of Record.  Last year Hopkins was a Co-Rider on the team led by Ciaran Naran, Huntington Beach, Calif. in the Pro Moto Unlimited class where they finished second by just three points to Bolivia’s Juan Carlos Salvatierra.

     For this year’s SCORE San Felipe, Hopkins has entered as a solo rider in the Pro Moto Unlimited Class where he will ride the No. 92x Husqvarna 450FE.

    In last year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Hopkins and Naran split the riding and were the overall motorcycle winners in the race.

   After his 2023 SCORE San Felipe victory in Pro Moto Unlimited, Hopkins said, “The race was alright. I had some arm pump in the first 20 or 30 miles, then stopped at Baja Pits and was able to shake it out a little bit and get a drink of water. It went smooth from there. Had a couple small tip-overs. The brake has a little zip tie here from a crash or something and it kept pulling my brake lever so I kind of wheelied off a couple G-outs and my front end tucked and tossed me over the bars pretty good a couple of times. But I got back up and it was pretty good. This is awesome. Ciarnan got us in a good spot this morning and we just decided to go for a trail ride and click off the miles. This is great to do this on a Husqvarna. We get a little bit of help from them. It’s awesome”.
