ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – Launching its sixth decade as the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization this year, pre-running opened Saturday at 8 a.m. PT on the unique 285.69-mile race course for this month’s King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250, that features two special sections only for motorcycles and quads.
Attempting to reduce the number of motorcycles and quads that would be passed by the fastest cars and trucks, this is the third time in the history of SCORE International that there will be two sections part of the overall race course just for motorcycles and quads.
Round 1 of the four-race 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held March 20-24 on a rugged 285.69-mile race course in and around the quaint, peaceful village of San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.
FAST FACTS
Pre-race Contingency and Tech Inspection and the start/finish line compound will be located on the picturesque El Malecon in San Felipe along the inspiring azure waters of the Sea of Cortez.
San Felipe is 125 miles south of the U.S. Border at Calexico, Calif. on the eastern side of the Baja peninsula. All four 2023 SCORE races will be held on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the eighth consecutive year.
SCORE, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, is celebrating its 51st season in 2024.
BY THE NUMBERS
With over 250 entries anticipated at the start line to launch the sixth decade of SCORE desert racing, 232 total entries have been received so far for the popular ‘Spring Break’ event, with racers representing 27 U.S. States, U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico, and nine countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, France, New Zealand, and Peru.
To date, there are 174 cars/trucks/utvs entered and 58 motorcycles/quads.
DOUBLE DIGITS
With double-digit entries to date are the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck (high-tech, unlimited, 1000-horsepower, custom trucks) with 38, Trophy Truck Spec (SCORE Trophy Trucks with spec engines) with 45, Class 10 (10), Pro UTV Open (19), Pro UTV FI (16), Pro UTV Stock (13), Pro Moto Unlimited (13) and Pro Moto Ironman (solo riders) with 14.
ANOTHER AMAZING COURSE
With pre-running opening today (Saturday, March 9) for the King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250, SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva and Co-Race Director Rodolfo Fernandez have put together another memorable race course to challenge the world’s best desert racers.
“This year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 race course will be another memorable one that will challenge even the veteran SCORE Baja racers and it will be much faster than most people might think,” commented Grijalva. “There is a little bit of everything including the dry lake beds and tire-crunching, unforgiving metal-bending Baja washes that will help make this year’s race one of the toughest ever. We are very pleased with the two special separate sections we have identified for the motorcycle and quad classes that will give them a beautiful race without having to look behind to see if a car or truck is catching them. This race and this race course will be a wonderful way to launch the 51st year of SCORE International.”
Starting and finishing back on the picturesque El Malecon, the race is 285.69 miles, running in a counter-clockwise direction and features one physical full stop checkpoint (Borrego Road Crossing at race-mile 201.03).
For just the third time and for safety reasons, SCORE has developed two separate sections within the overall race course for motorcycles and quads only, but all Pro classes will still cover 285.69 total miles of magnificent Baja terrain. All Sportsman classes will run a course of 284.86
There are 133 virtual checkpoints for cars/trucks/UTVs, 111 for motos/quads. The course has eight speed zones for a total of 6.90 miles.
The course heads North to the Zoo Road crossing up to the El Chinero area North for an extended long loop through Laguna Saldana, the Arroyo Grande, through Arroyo Arrajal, South to Borrego, down through Laguna Diablo, South past Morelia Junction, finally heading east gloriously infamous Chanate Wash, before heading north for the final sprint to the finish line.
The moto/quad first deviation of the course is at RM 90.51 north of El Chinero and rejoins the overall course at RM 178.77. The second deviation starts at RM 270.56, heading south to make a long loop through Chanate Wash, back east through Azufre Wash where those classes will run North parallel to the car/truck/utv course before joining back up at rm 278.62, for the final seven miles to the finish line on El Malecon.
All Sportsman classes will run a reduced course of 284.79 miles.
The official course map, GPS files, course notes and Racer’s Information packet are all available on the SCORE website. They are located under race info for the SCORE San Felipe 250.

SANTIAGO CREEL
International Motorcycle Rally Racer and prominent Mexico City entrepreneur Santiago Creel, 37, has entered the 55th SCORE Baja 500 in the Trophy Truck Spec class.
Creel, who only started SCORE racing in 2017, has compiled an enviable record of five season class point titles including two class wins in the SCORE Baja 500, 2019 in Pro Moto Limited and 2020 in Trophy Truck Spec as the second driver for Jorge Sampietro.
Creel has won an impressive nine Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Awards, presented by Toyota Escondido, including a SCORE-record three in 2019, when he led teams as the Rider of Record in Pro Moto Unlimited, Pro Moto Limited and Pro Moto 30.
As DOR in Trophy Truck Spec last year, Creel started his 2023 campaign with a 16th place finish out of a SCORE-record 43 starters in San Felipe. In last year’s SCORE Baja 500, 20th out of 31 starters in his class, he finished 20th out of 37 starters in the SCORE Baja 400. Creel ended the season by finishing ninth out of 34 starters in the SCORE Baja 1000.
He drives his No. 260 Monkey Business TSCO-Chevy. In 2023, Creel finished eighth in the season points in his class out of 60 total starters.
MCR
A veteran of nearly 30 years of SCORE racing, champion racer and Polaris Factory racer Mike Cafro, 53, Temecula, Calif. (originally from Fallbrook, Calif.), is entered again in the Pro UTV Open class in his No. 1876 Mike Cafro Racing (MCR) Polaris RZR Pro R.
In 2023, Cafro finished fourth in points in his ultra-competitive class, finishing all four races with third, sixth, 11th and fifth place results in the four races. He has now won three consecutive SCORE Milestone Awards for racers who complete every required mile of each race.
His teammate and second driver is Jamie Kirkpatrick, 42, Olympia, Wash. as the duo finished a solid second place on the podium in two races in 2022, won at the SCORE Baja 400 and finished fifth in class in the SCORE Baja 1000 to capture the season point champion in their first season in their new class.
In 2021, Cafro and Kirkpatrick had an amazing season in the Pro UTV Stock class, going undefeated in all four races, to win the season point title in a Polaris RZR Turbo S.
Cafro started racing with SCORE with his brother Carmen as his teammate and they had numerous class wins on three-wheel ATVs early in their careers and then Mike’s passion had him winning races and titles in domestic series across the U.S. on a four-wheel quad.
In addition to his second-place class finish in 2022 and third place last year in the SCORE San Felipe 250, Cafro has four career class wins in this SCORE race (2002, 2007, 2014, 2021).
SALAS JR

The talented new duo covered the blistering course in a penalty-free 10:29:59, averaging 45.11 miles per hour on their hard-charging No. 11x KTM 450XCF.
In one of the most competitive motorcycle battles in recent SCORE history, Salas Jr battled three other teams for the majority of the race, exchanging leads physically several times.
In 2022, Salas Jr was on the winning motorcycle team led by Bolivia’ Juan Carlos Salvatierra.
In his first SCORE race as the rider of record with his own team, an emotional Salas Jr, expressed at the finish line at the 2023 SCORE Baja 500, “It was a very good race. It took us a lot of time and effort to make it possible and this would never have been such a good race without the support of our incredible team and our amazing families. The race was awesome, full of competition.”
“We battled the 9x (Connor Eddy), 3x (Ciaran Naran) and 1x (Juan Carlos Salvatierra) until the very last mile and I want to give them props for a great race and for keeping it fun. We had a perfect bike the entire race, I bet it could still run another 500 miles if we had to. I have no complaints at all and am very happy about how it turned out.”
For this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Salas Jr is Rider of Record on the No. 11x Honda CRF450X motorcycle with another young gun, Carter Klein, 19, Agua Dulce, Calif., as his second rider. Klein was a co-rider in last year’s SCORE Baja 1000 for race champion Juan Carlos Salvatierra.
