Nearly 270 racers in Baja for SCORE San Felipe 250

O’Neal tops 116 racers with 243 total combined class wins

ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – Launching its sixth decade as the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization this year, looking to add another trophy to his record-setting class win total, SoCal’s veteran age-group champion motorcycle racer Jim O’Neal, will help lead 116 racers who have combined for 243 class wins among over 270 racers expected to start Saturday’s King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250.

O’Neal, 77, the noted apparel manufacturer from Santa Barbara, Calif., has 19 class wins in San Felipe and will be a co-rider this year in two age-group motorcycle classes. He will pull double duty going for his 20th class win.

He will be riding sections for both the Francisco Septien team in the Pro Moto 40 class for riders over 40 years old and the Scott McIntosh team in Pro Moto 60 for riders over 60 years old.

FAST FACTS

Round 1 of the four-race 2024 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held March 20-24 on a rugged 285.69-mile race course in and around the quaint, peaceful village of San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.

The unique 285.69-mile race course for this year’s King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250 features two special sections only for motorcycles and quads.

Attempting to reduce the number of motorcycles and quads that would be passed by the fastest cars and trucks, this is the third time in the history of SCORE International that there will be two sections part of the overall race course just for motorcycles and quads.

GREEN FLAG

The King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250, will be an elapsed-time race with staggered starts as the green flag on Saturday, March 23 will drop first for the motorcycles and quads at 6 a.m. (PT) and 9 a.m. (PT) for the cars, trucks and UTVs. While the fastest vehicles are expected to finish in around four and one-half hours, all vehicles will have a 13-hour time limit in the 285.59-mile race to become official finishers in the iconic race.

Pre-race Contingency and Tech Inspection and the start/finish line compound will be located on the picturesque El Malecon in San Felipe along the inspiring azure waters of the Sea of Cortez.

San Felipe is 125 miles south of the U.S. Border at Calexico, Calif. on the eastern side of the Baja peninsula. All four 2024 SCORE races will be held on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the eighth consecutive year.

SCORE, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, is celebrating its 51st season in 2024.

BY THE NUMBERS

With over 270 entries anticipated at the start line to launch the sixth decade of SCORE desert racing, 254 total entries have been received so far for the popular ‘Spring Break’ event, with racers representing 28 U.S. States, U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico, and 10 countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, France, New Zealand, and Peru.

To date, there are 188 cars/trucks/utvs entered and 66 motorcycles/quads.

O’NEAL HAS RETURNED

Leading the gregarious group of 116 racers with at least one class win in this race entered this year is Jim O’Neal (Pro Moto 40 and Pro Moto 60) with a SCORE race-record 19 class wins (age group motorcycle) wins--all in the last 25 years.

O’Neal also has 41 starts out of 55 years in the SCORE Baja 500 and 42 starts out of 56 years in the SCORE Baja 1000.

O’Neal is the only person who has raced in all 36 previous SCORE San Felipe 250 races and he has a SCORE-record 24 season class point titles in his lengthy career.

With double-digit entries to date are the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck (high-tech, unlimited, 1000-horsepower, custom trucks) with 38, Trophy Truck Spec (SCORE Trophy Trucks with spec engines) with 44, Class 10 (12), Pro UTV Open (21), Pro UTV FI (19), Pro UTV Stock (14), Pro Moto Unlimited (12), and Pro Moto Ironman (solo riders) with 14.

SCORE LIVE

During qualifying on Thursday, contingency on Friday and the race on Saturday until the course closes on Sunday early morning, SCORE Live streaming will be broadcasting race activities and start and finish line interviews as well as live action from Drones, ground cameras and in-car cameras from around the race course. There will also be live Zoom interviews for individuals around the race course as part of SCORE Live for this race.

Popular Rat Sult, who is starting his ninth season as the voice of SCORE, will once again serve as host and lead ramp announcer of the expansive SCORE Live streaming. Assisting Sult will be Mexico’s Gabriel Garcia.

Sult and Garcia will be announcing from the SCORE start/finish ramp while the show will also include SCORE studio announcers in El Cajon, Calif., providing live info and updates throughout the race. Host announce in the SCORE Studio will again be Brandon Johnson while co-hosts during the race will be Wes Miller and Heidi Steele.

SCORE live is being produced again by SCORE Media House, Bud Brutsman, producer, Alberto Luna, on-site director.

Coverage will also include Austin Farner in the studio announcing during qualifying.

SCORE live may be launched from the home page of the SCORE website or from the SCORE App.

ON-SITE REGISTRATION

Being held in the Centro Commercial Plaza Armex in San Felipe. On Wednesday, March 20, registration for qualifying teams only will be held from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Regular on-site and late racer registration will be held on Thursday (March 21) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT and on Friday (March 22) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. No new entries will be accepted after 4 p.m. PT on Thursday (March 21) and 3 p.m. PT on Friday (March 22).

Media Registration will be held at the same location from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on both Wednesday (March 20) and Thursday (March 21) and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday (March 22).

METHOD RACE WHEELS SCORE QUALIFYING

For just the fifth time in the history of this popular ‘Spring Break’ race, SCORE will hold the Method Race Wheels SCORE Qualifying session starting at 7 a.m. PT on Thursday, March 21 to determine the starting positions within each class for the SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend and Trophy Truck Spec classes. The starting order for qualifying in each class will be the order in which they entered the race.

The first to qualify in SCORE Trophy Truck will be Adam Householder, Placentia, Calif., and the first to qualify in the Trophy Truck Spec class will be Thor Herbst, Las Vegas.

Entries received in the qualifying classes received after Friday, March 8 are being given then next available starting slot within their respective classes.

Qualifying will be held on a 5.23-mile course not used before by SCORE. Qualifying is not open to the public.

Qualifying will be part of the SCORE Live streaming of the event accessed through the SCORE website.

THREE DECADES-PLUS

OTRO MAS, POR FAVOR….

Second in class wins behind O’Neal is Eric Solorzano with 11 wins in Class 11 in this San Felipe race.

Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer and desert racing G.O.A.T. Rob MacCachren, 59, has 10 class wins including a SCORE-record six overall wins in San Felipe (SCORE Trophy Truck) and with eight class wins in San Felipe is Wayne Matlock (Pro UTV Open).

With six class victories each are Larry Roeseler, 66, (SCORE TT Legend), and Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr, 42, (SCORE Trophy Truck).

With five career class wins in the SCORE San Felipe 250 racing this year are Francisco Septien, Ensenada (Pro Moto 40) and Gustavo Vildosola Sr, 70 (SCORE TT Legend).

With four career class wins each in San Felipe are Tim Herbst (SCORE Trophy Truck), Chad Broughton, (SCORE Trophy Truck), Mike Cafro (Pro UTV Open), Elias Hanna (Pro UTV FI), Dan Worley (Class 10), Eli Yee (Class 5), Fernando Beltran (Pro Moto Unlimited), and Shane Esposito (Pro Moto 40).

With three career class wins each in San Felipe entered this year are Luke McMillin (SCORE Trophy Truck), Marc Burnett (Pro UTV FI), Daniel Chamlee (Class 7), Santiago Creel (Trophy Truck Spec), Mikey Lawrence (SCORE Trophy Truck), Kristen Matlock (Pro UTV Open), Steve Olliges (SCORE Trophy Truck), Stan Potter (Class 10), and Jorge Sampietro (Trophy Truck Spec).

There are also 15 racers entered with two class wins in the SCORE San Felipe 250.

Led by Luke McMillin as the two-time defending SCORE Trophy Truck and overall race winner, there are 19 defending 2023 SCORE San Felipe 250 class champs who are entered this year.

PRE-RUNNING

Pre-running on the official 285.69-mile race course opened on March 9. Pre-running starts at race-mile .70 and finishes at race-mile 284.38.

This year’s race course runs in a counter-clockwise direction with one physical checkpoint at the Borrego Road crossing. Motorcycle and quad classes have two deviations to the overall race course, but all vehicles will run the exact same total mileage. Sportsman classes will run 284.86 total miles.

ANOTHER AMAZING COURSE

With pre-running continuing since March 9 for the King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250, SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva and Co-Race Director Rodolfo Fernandez have put together another memorable race course to challenge the world’s best desert racers.

Starting and finishing back on the picturesque El Malecon, the race is 285.69 miles, running in a counter-clockwise direction and features one physical full stop checkpoint (Borrego Road Crossing at race-mile 201.03).

For just the third time and for safety reasons, SCORE has developed two separate sections within the overall race course for motorcycles and quads only, but all Pro classes will still cover 285.69 total miles of magnificent Baja terrain. All Sportsman classes will run a course of 284.86.

There are 133 virtual checkpoints for cars/trucks/UTVs, 111 for motos/quads. The course has eight speed zones for a total of 6.90 miles.

The course heads North to the Zoo Road crossing up to the El Chinero area North for an extended long loop through Laguna Saldana, the Arroyo Grande, through Arroyo Arrajal, South to Borrego, down through Laguna Diablo, South past Morelia Junction, finally heading east through the gloriously infamous Chanate Wash, before heading north for the final sprint to the finish line.

The moto/quad first deviation of the course is at RM 90.51 north of El Chinero and rejoins the overall course at RM 178.77. The second deviation starts at RM 270.56, heading south to make a long loop through Chanate Wash, back east through Azufre Wash where those classes will run North parallel to the car/truck/utv course before joining back up at rm 278.62, for the final seven miles to the finish line on El Malecon.

All Sportsman classes will run a reduced course of 284.86 miles.

POST—GRAND MARSHAL

Grand Marshal for this year’s King Shocks 37th SCORE San Felipe 250 is SCORE champion racer Mark Post, a prominent businessman in Southern California and Las Vegas.

Post, 65, of Las Vegas and Laguna Beach, Calif., who has been an active desert racer for nearly 30 years, recorded his most impressive season in 2007 when he won the SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship. In 2007, with the iconic Rob MacCachren as his second driver, Post won the 40th anniversary SCORE Baja 1000, a race of 1296.39 miles from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in his spectacular No. 3 Riviera Racing Black Diamond Ford F-150.

Post, MacCachren, and third driver Carl Renezeder, covered the distance in 25 hours, 21 minutes, and 25 seconds, averaging 53.43 miles per hour to be the fastest overall four-wheel vehicle finisher in the race.

In his remarkable 2007 SCORE season Post finished fourth in the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, first in the SCORE San Felipe 250, fourth in the SCORE Baja 500, second in the SCORE Terrible’s Las Vegas Primm 300, capped by his massive victory in the season-ending 40th SCORE Baja 1000 from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas.

Also in 2007, Riviera Racing won the SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Cup short-course event on the dirt track at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway with Rob MacCachren driving.

In the SCORE San Felipe 250, Post has three career class wins, two with Jerry Whelchel before winning in 2007 in SCORE Trophy Truck with MacCachren. Post and Whelchel won Class 1 in this race in 1998 and again in 2004 in SCORE Trophy Truck.

Post also earned a prestigious SCORE Milestone Award in 2007.

In his illustrious SCORE racing career, Post has seven career SCORE Trophy Truck race victories, (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and his three in 2007.

DEPTH OF BAJA

Wednesday through Sunday of this week, a special photography show called ‘Depth of Baja’ will be featured in the lobby area at the Stella Del Mar Hotel in San Felipe.

Featuring samples of some of the most creative images shot at SCORE Baja races over the years, a sampling from four photography companies will be on exhibit. The display will feature the photographic art of Get Some Photo (Art Eugenio & Dick Gray), HighRev Photography (Jason Zindroski), Araiza 11 (Ernesto Araiza) and Bink Designs (Brian Binkert & Tony Lopez).

There is no admission charge to the exhibit, and the photographers will be on hand frequently as their work schedules allow.
